Cherry country
Young is the main town of Hilltops Council, formed in 2016 when Young, Boorowa and Harden merged. The 2021 Census counted 10,610 people in Young and 19,254 across the council. Young is known for its cherry orchards and packing sheds, and there's grain country around it too.
Packing sheds work hard in season. A breakdown in the middle of the season is the worst time to find out the wiring isn't up to it.
Getting Nelson to Young
At 141 km by road, Young is near the outer edge of where NAF Electrical travels. Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out, so a trip to Young carries a travel charge. The online estimators work it out from your address, and it's always shown in your written quote.
To make the trip worthwhile, it often makes sense to:
- book pre-season work on the packing shed in one go
- have test and tag done for several sheds or businesses in the same visit
- combine an EV charger with any switchboard work it needs
These are suggestions for planning, not a regular Young run. Call 0416 085 416 to talk through what you've got.
Before the season starts
Test and tag. Packing sheds and workshops are often hostile environments under the WHS rules: moisture, dust, vibration and cords that get knocked about. Equipment there must be regularly inspected and tested, and SafeWork NSW expects workshop and manufacturing equipment to be done every 6 months. Test and tag is priced on the number of items, with the per-item price dropping as the count goes up and three-phase items costing more. You get a digital test register. Try the test and tag estimate.
Three-phase and bigger loads. Bigger machines may need three-phase. Supply above 100 A per phase has to be three-phase under the NSW Service and Installation Rules, and adding a big load may need a connection application to Essential Energy. Our three-phase power guide explains it. Work at the service fuse or meter is done by a Level 2 ASP.
Homes and EV chargers
For homes, EV charger installation is install only: you supply the charger and Nelson installs it. The EV charger estimate gives you a price, travel included. If the switchboard needs an upgrade first, that's quoted separately, and replacing a board brings RCD protection to every applicable circuit.
Nearby
Harden is about 132 km from Wagga and Cootamundra about 93 km. Cootamundra is closer, so travel costs less there.
Young is on the Essential Energy network. For outages, fallen lines or a shock or tingle, call 13 20 80, or 000 if someone is hurt. Workplace shocks must also be notified to SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50.
Common questions
How often should a cherry packing shed test and tag?
If the equipment is used in hostile conditions, SafeWork NSW's general rule is at least every 12 months, and every 6 months for workshop and manufacturing equipment. Hire equipment is every 3 months.
How is travel from Wagga to Young priced?
Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out, and Young is about 141 km away, so a travel charge applies on top of the job. The estimators work it out from your address, or call Nelson or send the job through for a written quote.
Do you install EV chargers in Young?
Yes. It's install only, so you supply the charger. The price depends on the cable run, your switchboard and travel; the EV charger estimate works it out, and unusually long cable runs or switchboard work are quoted separately.
Do I need an electrician licensed for test and tag?
No. In NSW a trained competent person can test and tag. Using a licensed electrician means faults can be repaired properly as well.
