Harden and the Hilltops
Harden is part of Hilltops Council, which was formed in 2016 when Young, Boorowa and Harden merged. The 2021 Census counted 19,254 people across the council area.
At 132 km by road, Harden is towards the outer edge of where Nelson travels. That's worth being upfront about, because travel makes up a bigger part of the bill out here.
How travel works
Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out, once per visit. At 132 km, Harden is well into the charged range. The online estimators work out travel from your address, and your written quote shows it as its own line.
For a quick job, travel can be more than the work itself. So it often makes sense to:
- put every job on the house, shed or rental property into the one visit
- combine a switchboard upgrade with the extra circuits you'd want anyway
- if you manage a few properties or businesses in town, line their work up for the same trip
That's a suggestion, not a set run day. Call 0416 085 416 and talk it through.
Jobs that make the drive worthwhile
Switchboard upgrades
A switchboard upgrade is usually a full day's work, so travel is a smaller share. When a board is replaced, every applicable circuit gets RCD protection. Pricing goes by circuit count: try the switchboard estimate. Asbestos, service fuse or meter work is quoted separately and done by a licensed removalist or Level 2 ASP.
Rental properties
Landlords in NSW must keep smoke alarms working, check them every year and replace them within 10 years of manufacture. A hardwired smoke alarm must be repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician, and any electrical fault in a rental is an urgent repair. Our guide to landlord electrical obligations sets out what's required and what isn't. For example, NSW has no law requiring regular electrical safety inspections of rentals.
Farm sheds
Machinery sheds and workshops get sheds and workshops wiring: lights, power and machine circuits, with RCD protection where tools are used in dusty or wet conditions.
Nearby
Young is about 141 km from Wagga and Cootamundra about 93 km. Cootamundra is closer, so travel is less.
Harden is on the Essential Energy network. For outages, fallen lines or a shock or tingle, call 13 20 80, or 000 if someone is hurt.
Common questions
Will an electrician from Wagga come to Harden?
Yes, for the right job. Travel is charged per visit and adds up at this distance, so it works best for bigger jobs or several jobs grouped together. Call Nelson or send the job through for a written quote.
Do NSW landlords have to install safety switches?
No NSW law requiring it was found. The condition report records whether a safety switch is present and working, and a faulty one is an urgent repair.
Can the tenant fix a hardwired smoke alarm?
No. Tenants may replace removable batteries only. Hardwired alarms must be repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician, within 2 business days of the landlord finding out.
How do I check an electrician's licence?
Use the NSW Government licence check at verify.licence.nsw.gov.au. NAF Electrical's contractor licence is 374694C.
