Cootamundra and its surrounds
Cootamundra is the larger of the two main towns in the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council area. The 2021 Census counted 6,885 people in Cootamundra and 11,403 across the council. It's a rail junction on the Main South line, surrounded by wheat and sheep country.
So the work here is a mix: homes in town, shops and businesses in the main street, and farm sheds and pumps out of town.
Switchboards in established homes
If your home is older, the switchboard may be too. The NSW Government recommends having an electrician check any property built before 2000. Signs it's time to get yours checked:
- ceramic rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
- no safety switches (RCDs)
- a black or dark brown "pitch" backing board
- scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell
- fuses blowing or breakers tripping often
Our guide to signs you need a switchboard upgrade goes through each one. When a switchboard is replaced, every applicable circuit on it must get RCD protection, so a switchboard upgrade brings the whole house up to current safety switch requirements in one go.
Pricing depends on how many circuits you have. You can get a figure from the switchboard estimate before Nelson visits. If the old board might contain asbestos, or the service fuse or meter needs work, those parts are quoted separately and done by a licensed removalist or a Level 2 ASP.
When something keeps tripping
Fault finding is charged by the hour. A safety switch that trips again and again is usually telling you something real, like moisture in an outdoor fitting or a failing appliance. Nelson tracks it down rather than just resetting it.
Travel to Cootamundra
Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out. Cootamundra is about 93 km by road, so a travel charge applies, and the switchboard estimate works it out from your address.
Since a switchboard upgrade is usually most of a day's work, travel is a smaller share of the total. For smaller jobs, it's worth adding anything else on your list to the same visit.

Common questions
How is a switchboard upgrade in Cootamundra priced?
It depends on the number of circuits, the enclosure and whether the main switch is single or three-phase, plus travel from Wagga. The online estimate gives you a figure from your circuit count and address.
Is my old fuse box illegal?
No. NSW has no general law making owner-occupiers replace an old fuse board. It's still worth checking, especially with no safety switches, because the NSW Government says electrical faults and appliances cause 40% of house fires in NSW each year.
Can you do work on a Cootamundra shop?
Yes. Lighting, power, data points, fit-outs and maintenance for businesses. Call or send the job through for a written quote.
Who do I call if the power goes out across the street?
Essential Energy on 13 20 80. Outages on the network are theirs to fix. If it's only your place, check your switchboard first, then call an electrician.
