Where dryland meets irrigation
Narrandera is the main town of Narrandera Shire. The 2021 Census counted 4,369 people in Narrandera and 5,698 across the shire. It sits on the edge of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, with both irrigated and dryland cropping around it, so irrigation pumps are a common sight.
That means the electrical work here leans towards motors, pumps and the supply to run them, alongside homes that work hard in summer.
Pumps, sheds and three-phase supply
Irrigation pumps and big sheds are serious loads. Before adding one, it's worth knowing:
- Supply above 100 A per phase has to be three-phase under the NSW Service and Installation Rules.
- Adding a large load such as an irrigation pump may need a connection application to Essential Energy, with a maximum demand calculation.
- Work at the service fuse, meter or service line is done by a Level 2 ASP, not an ordinary electrician.
Nelson can do the circuit work, the maximum demand calculation and coordinate with the ASP where needed. See rural electrical and our guide to three-phase power for more.
Pump sites are often wet and dusty. Portable tools used there are "hostile environment" equipment under the WHS rules, which means RCD protection and regular testing.
Keeping cool in a Riverina summer
Wagga's mean January maximum is about 32 °C, and Narrandera summers are hot too. Air conditioning does a lot of work, and a big split system or ducted unit usually needs its own circuit. Our air conditioner circuit guide explains why, and heating and cooling covers the electrical side of an install.
Travel from Wagga
Narrandera is about 98 km from Wagga by road. Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out, so a trip this far does carry a travel charge. The online estimators work it out from your address, and for other work Nelson includes it in your written quote.
For a run this long, grouping jobs is worth thinking about. Pump circuit plus a shed light upgrade, or an aircon circuit plus extra power points, all on one trip. If a few local businesses need test and tag, booking around the same time can make sense too.
Same direction
Grong Grong is about 83 km from Wagga, on the way. Leeton is about 128 km and Barellan about 136 km.
Narrandera is on the Essential Energy network. For outages, fallen lines or a shock or tingle, call 13 20 80, or 000 if someone is hurt. Stay at least 8 m away from fallen powerlines.
Common questions
Do I need an application to Essential Energy for a new irrigation pump?
Possibly. If the pump would push your maximum demand above what your connection allows, or put significant load on the network, a written connection application is needed. Nelson can calculate it and tell you.
Can you connect my pump to the power pole?
Connecting to the network is Level 2 ASP work. Nelson does the wiring on your side and can coordinate with an ASP for the connection.
How is the cost worked out for a job in Narrandera?
The price depends on the work itself and the travel from Wagga, which is charged at this distance. Fault finding is charged by the hour, and other work gets a written quote first. Call Nelson or send the job through.
Does my aircon need its own circuit?
Larger units usually do. Nelson checks the unit's requirements and whether your switchboard has room for it, then quotes in writing.
