A river town in grazing country
Gundagai is a Hume Highway town on the Murrumbidgee River, in the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council area. The 2021 Census counted 1,699 people in Gundagai itself and 11,403 across the council area, which was formed by a 2016 merger. It's grazing country, so much of the work that matters is out of town: sheds, pumps, stock water and the power between them.
NAF Electrical is based in Wagga Wagga. Nelson is a licensed NSW electrical contractor (licence 374694C), and when you call, you're talking to the person who'll do the job.
Travel to Gundagai
Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out. Gundagai is about 84 km by road, so a travel charge applies. The switchboard, test and tag and EV charger estimates work it out from your address.
The travel is the same for one small job or a full day, so it often makes sense to group a few things into the one trip, like a switchboard check plus extra power points, or a shed circuit plus outdoor lighting. A suggestion, not a rule.
Work that comes up on grazing properties
- Rural electrical: power to sheds, pumps, yards and outbuildings, and fault finding on long runs.
- Private power poles: on rural properties, poles and lines past the connection point usually belong to the owner, and Essential Energy recommends having them inspected every year before bushfire season and after big storms. Our guide to private power poles in NSW explains who is responsible for what. Some pole work has to be done by Essential Energy or a Level 2 ASP; Nelson can tell you which part is which.
- Sheds and workshops: lights, power and machine circuits, done to AS/NZS 3000:2018.
- Switchboard upgrades: if your board still has ceramic fuses or no safety switches, it's worth getting looked at. You can get a rough figure from the switchboard estimate before Nelson comes out.
The power network around Gundagai
Gundagai is on the Essential Energy network, like the rest of the Riverina. For outages, fallen lines or a shock or tingle from a tap or appliance, call Essential Energy on 13 20 80 (or 000 if someone is hurt) and stay well clear. Nelson looks after the wiring on your side of the connection point.
Nearby on the same run
If you're further along the road, the Adelong page covers the same distance, and Tumut is about 103 km from Wagga. Closer to home, Tarcutta is about 56 km and Wantabadgery about 41 km, which cost less in travel.
Common questions
Will an electrician come from Wagga to Gundagai for a small job?
Yes. Travel is charged on top of the job, so for a small job it's worth asking yourself whether there's anything else to add while Nelson is there. Call 0416 085 416 or send the job through the quote form.
Who fixes the power pole on my farm?
It depends who owns it. Poles past the connection point are generally the property owner's to maintain, but work on a pole connected to the network has to be arranged with Essential Energy or an authorised Level 2 ASP. Nelson can look at what you've got and point you to the right people.
Do I get a certificate for work done in Gundagai?
Yes. Every job gets tested and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is lodged through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, the same as in Wagga.
Can you quote before coming out?
There are instant estimates for switchboards, test and tag and EV chargers. For anything else, send photos and Nelson will give you a written price before work starts.
