A long trip, planned properly
Barellan is one of the further places NAF Electrical covers. Nelson is based in Wagga Wagga, holds NSW contractor licence 374694C, and does home, farm and business work across the Riverina out to about 150 km.
When a town is this far out, the most useful thing we can do is be clear about how it's priced and help you get the most out of the visit.
How travel is charged
Travel is free close to Wagga and charged further out, so a trip to Barellan, about 136 km by road, carries a travel charge. It's the same whether Nelson is there for an hour or all day. The online estimates work it out from your address, and for other jobs it's shown on your written quote.
How to get the most from the visit
- Make a full list. Walk around the house, sheds and yards. Lights that don't work, a safety switch that trips, the shed that needs more power, the outdoor point you've been meaning to add.
- Take photos. Photos of the switchboard and the problem areas let Nelson quote in writing before he comes and bring the right gear.
- Ask the neighbours. If someone nearby needs work too, mention it when you call. It may make sense to fit both in on one trip.
- Use the estimates. For switchboards, test and tag and EV chargers, there are instant online estimates that include travel from your address.
The work that tends to come up
Farm power. Rural electrical covers sheds, pumps, outbuildings and long cable runs. Pumps and sheds are workplaces under the WHS rules, and portable tools used in dusty or wet conditions need RCD protection.
Power to a shed. Our power to a shed guide explains what decides the cable, whether you need three-phase, and whether your switchboard can take it.
Fault finding. Fault finding is charged by the hour, so a good description of what trips, when and what was running helps a lot.
Private poles. Poles and lines past the connection point usually belong to the owner. Essential Energy recommends inspection every year before bushfire season and after big storms.
Other towns in the same direction
Ardlethan is about 104 km from Wagga, Narrandera about 98 km and Leeton about 128 km. Those are closer, so travel costs less.
Barellan is on the Essential Energy network. For outages, fallen lines or a shock or tingle, call 13 20 80, or 000 if someone is hurt. Stay at least 8 m from fallen powerlines.
Common questions
Is Barellan inside your service area?
Yes. NAF covers about 150 km from Wagga, and Barellan is about 136 km by road. Travel is charged on top of the job, and you'll see it in the estimate or written quote before you book.
Can you quote without coming out?
Often, yes. Send photos and a description and Nelson will give you a written price. Some faults can only be priced by the hour, because nobody knows how long they'll take to find.
What happens after the work is done?
Every circuit is tested and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is lodged through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal. You get a copy by email.
Can I do some of the wiring myself to save money?
No. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW and can void your home insurance. Changing a light globe and plugging in appliances are about the limit.
